Lumbar Spinal Disease (LSD) is a general term used to describe any spinal problem affecting the lumbar vertebrae of your dog's spine. The area of concern is between and including the thoracic and sacral vertebrae, commonly referred to as Th10 through Sacrum or S2! These are all the L-shaped vertebrae you will see on Xrays just above/below the tail bone in dogs!
Most problems involving this area can be attributed to degenerative changes caused by aging, but they may also result from injury or previous fracture or dislocation of one or more lumbar vertebra! For example, if there was an old injury such as a fracture, it would not have healed naturally, leaving a malaligned fragment that could become loose over time causing pressure on surrounding nerves! Sometimes there are other factors involved in developing these degenerative diseases which include:
1.Prolonged standing or sitting
These conditions often occur more frequently in larger breed dogs due to their size and weight! They develop because the weight and position placed on certain parts of the body cause compression and microtearing within the spine! This causes the formation of osteophytes(骨赘)and spurs at the end of the vertebrae where nerve roots exit! As the bones start to separate, the area becomes weaker allowing further separation to occur!
2.Repetitive movement or jumping
This applies mainly to agility and obedience working dogs who need to jump up onto high surfaces and leap down after completing their tasks! It also occurs when pets play with another dog or animal by running into them and jumping off! A single blow like this can be extremely damaging even without an accompanying fracture or dis
